Britannia (Britannia.co.uk) is a part of the Co-Operative Bank, one of the UK’s largest retail and commercial banks with a long history of ethical practices and policies. Once a mutual building society, Britannia joined the Co-Operative Financial Services in 2009, and in 2013 it was announced that the Britannia brand would eventually be phased out.

Currently, customers can still access Britannia mortgages through the Co-Operative Bank. Mortgages applications can be made in any Co-Operative Bank branch or by calling the bank’s contact number.

When customers go in to their local branch to begin the mortgage application process, or speak to an advisor on the phone, they’ll receive honest advice about which mortgages would best suit their circumstances and financial situation. They’ll also assist with conveyancing and all the legal matters involved with purchasing and a new property. Your advisor will also be able to provide information about insurance policies that are available to protect your new home.

Customers who are already have a qualifying current account with the Co-Operative Bank can get a little extra out of their Britannia mortgage, with £250 cashback available to new mortgage customers who hold an account.

Britannia offers a range of fixed rate short-term mortgages with varying interest rates. Some of these mortgages are available to customers with as low as 10% available for deposit, with loan to value percentages ranging from 60% up to 90%. Customers can get two or three year fixed term mortgages from Britannia, or move up to five years if they’d like a medium term. Customer seeking a longer-term mortgage will also find ten year fixed rate mortgages at 75% maximum loan to value. Many of Britannia’s fixed rate mortgages come with no setup fee, providing the best possible value for the customer.

Britannia has tracker mortgages available for customers who don’t mind taking a little risk on their interest rates. These mortgages have rates that rise and fall depending on the Bank of England base rate. Both of Britannia’s tracker mortgages are Lifetime plans, and do come with a setup fee.

My wife and I have only been married for 1 year and we decided that if we were going to buy a house, now would be the best time to do it.

Buying property is one of the best investments one can make, and although it can be a sacrifice, I feel that rather pay for something which is your own than rent from someone else, spending money for years and having nothing to show for it down the line.

We approached building societies and banks and in the end we decided to work with Britannia. They are part of the Co-Operative Bank. So I knew we were fine with them. They went out of their way to help us make the best possible plan and were very patient.

We chose the fixed rate over 5 years so that we know to the cent how much our monthly payments are, and this option will change to a flexible rate after this period as at least it will give us the security of knowing where we stand in the early years of our marriage.
Later on , we understand the interest rate will rise or fall depending on orders from the Bank of England and the economy of our country, which I have faith in to improve.

We are both very excited and happy that we were granted the loan in a few days.
Thank you Britannia for your guidance.

I read quite a lot of negative reviews of mortgage providers on the internet while I was going through my mortgage application and it really made me nervous, so I think it’s important that people who’ve had good experiences also contribute with reviews so there’s a balanced picture of all of the providers.

We got a Britannia mortgage from the Co-Operative in April. We did the application on the phone with an adviser who was very helpful and gave us a good sense of the different mortgage options before we began the actual application. Once we’d settled on what we wanted, which was a lifetime tracker mortgage, he gave us an approval in principle and only a week later we got confirmation of our acceptance. It was pretty straightforward and simple, with no major bumps or problems to report.

Since we’ve been making our repayments we’ve realised how lucky we were with Britannia. We’ve heard some real horror stories from friends who had awful experiences applying for a mortgage from their bank and our experience was nothing like that. I think Britannia probably had something to do with how easy the whole process was, so I’d recommend people give them a go.

I got a mortgage from Britannia through the Co-Operative Bank last year with no major problems at all. It was a relatively uncomplicated process- we had to send in a fair amount of payslips, financial information and that sort of thing but that’s all normal when you’re applying for a mortgage, and once the main stuff was out of the way we didn’t get repeated requests for more information. The mortgage was approved after a couple of weeks and the bank kept us updated over the weeks as to the status of our application and what we could expect next.

The customer service from Britannia was very good- the staff were all clued up on mortgages and answered all of our questions without any trouble. We’re happy with our mortgage from Britannia and the rate we received and would certainly recommend the service.
