Santander (Santander.co.uk) is a member of the Spanish Santander Group, but the UK plc runs independently as one of the UK’s largest financial services providers. Santander has over 1,000 UK branches and 14 million customers. The bank provides a wide range of financial services, from personal, business and corporate accounts to insurance, investments and savings services. Santander also operates an online banking service called Cahoot.

Santander’s extensive range of mortgages and mortgaging service has earned the bank a range of awards, including the 2013-2014 Your Mortgage award for “Best remortgage lender”, the 2013-2013 award for ‘Best direct mortgage lender’ and the Direct Awards 2013 ‘Best direct mortgage provider.’

Santander offers its customers a variety of fixed rate mortgages, most of which cover a two, three or five year time period. During the set period, customers receive a set monthly repayment rate, which moves over to the Standard Variable Rate after the timeframe ends. Santander customers can overpay up to 10% of their balance without receiving early repayment charges, but repaying the mortgage in full or moving the mortgage over during the fixed rate period will incur charges.

Santander also has tracker mortgages available, which follow the Bank of England base rate. These mortgages cover a two or three year period before moving over to the Standard Variable Rate. Customers seeking a longer-term tracker mortgage can also apply for the Lifetime Tracker mortgage from Santander, which keeps to the Bank of England base rate for the entirety of the mortgage term. These Santander tracker mortgages require the customer to have enough room in their monthly budget to accommodate rising interest rates during certain months when the Bank of England base rate increases.

Santander offers a range of Flexible Offest mortgages, which is linked to the customer’s savings to lower the interest rate, potentially leading to an earlier repayment of the mortgage. Santander’s Offset mortgages allow customers to access their savings at any time free of charge, and make overpayments at any stage.

With my good friends help I spent hours online looking for suitable mortgages and eventually decided to go with Santander who were offering a fixed rate mortgage that was within my affordability. I had hoped that my own bank would be able to match Santanders mortgage but they were reluctant and kept me waiting for days before giving me a very negative response.

So I went back to Santander and with the help of their mortgage adviser we finally put together a very affordable fixed rate mortgage and now that all the paperwork has been signed I can relax and enjoy buying my new flat and because the mortgage is already firmly on the table I can use it as a bargaining tool when negotiating with any potential sellers.

My partner and I went with a fixed rate mortgage from Santander because once we are married I am hoping to give up work to have a baby and we wanted to make sure that the mortgage repayments would remain the same for a 5 year period by which time my husband will be fully qualified in his job and thus earning a lot more and also I will hopefully be able to return to work part time if and when our children are old enough for nursery school.

The fact that we both bank with Santander wasn't really a big influence on our choice of mortgage lender, it was simply because they were offering the right mortgage for us. However, it was hard to ignore the fact that they have been given several awards in recent years for their mortgaging services, which was reassuring to us.

My name is Maria de Freitas, I'm 35 years old and have lived in the UK for the last 10 years.
I have a good job and although Im a single mother with 2 children I decided that it was time to buy ourselves a nice little apartment, rather than renting.

I was not sure how it worked in the UK, so I went online to compare all the options that were open to me in this country.

After a long search and help from a friend I decided on a mortgage over 25 years, with fixed interest over the first 5 years.
The reason for my choice is that I like to know exactly what my expenses are, and need to plan my life so that my children are safe. I don't want the "unknown" issue of how much my repayments will be from month to month.

This way I know that I will not get any nasty surprises with the rise of my installments one or 2 years down the road.
The bank I took out the mortgage with, Santander, was very helpful and explained to me clearly the difference between a fixed rate or a variable one, so I decided on the fixed. I think its the wisest thing to do. I would like to thank the bank representative for her help.
